A Pennsylvania Department of Transportation truck hauling an
excavator was involved in a traffic accident on the U.S. Route 219
Owens Way on-ramp Tuesday afternoon.
At 12:22 p.m., a PennDOT truck, operated by William Baldwin, 31,
of Smethport, and towing an excavator on a trailer, turned onto the
on-ramp heading south. The excavator, owned by Aerial Lift Rentals,
shifted, which caused the trailer and excavator to tip over onto
the east berm. The excavator damaged the guiderail when it fell,
Kane-based state police said.
The trailer and excavator were righted using another excavator.
The overturned excavator was moved onto a different trailer and was
taken from the scene. The truck and trailer, both owned by PennDOT,
had no damage, but the excavator sustained moderate damage, police
said.
State police were assisted on scene by PennDOT, Mascaro
Construction Co. of Pittsburgh, Bradford Township fire, fire police
and police, they said.
The Bradford Township Fire Department responded with a utility
truck and four firefighters, who used absorbent pads to contain
diesel fuel and motor oil leaking from the overturned
excavator.
State police investigated the accident because state vehicles
were involved.
