TOM MIX: The demise of his memory is greatly exaggerated …

So says Michael Wennin of Emporium who writes, “Your recent
article entitled ‘Tom Mix Memory Fades’ (9/13) indicated that the
memory of Tom Mix was somehow lost with the sale of the Mix
homestead.

“On the contrary. Tom Mix’s memory is alive and well at the
Cameron County Historical Society’s Little Museum in Sterling
Run.

“For 35 years the museum has housed a significant collection of
memorabilia, personal artifacts, family history, movie stills,
books and more,” he continues.

“Next season, visitors to the museum will be able to enjoy some
of Tom Mix’s movies as a way to introduce the King of Cowboys to
new generations of people.

“Presently, a CD is available with over 1,500 photos of Tom Mix
and other early movie cowboys. The Historical Society will be
keeping Mix’s memory alive for decades to come.

“As stewards of Cameron County’s history and heritage, the
Historical Society is proud to be able to make this collection
available to the public. The Museum is open until the end of
October this season on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1-4
p.m. There is no charge to visit the Museum, however donations are
appreciated.”

We can’t help but wonder if they’ll be refinancing that one
square inch of real estate we “own” from the Tom Mix homestead. Say
what you will, that was a pretty clever way to generate revenue for
the landmark.

LEFT OFF: A paragraph of attribution was lopped off an item in
Saturday’s RTS about St. Vincent College fielding a football team
this fall after a long hiatus.

John J. Cummiskey of Bradford, who had passed along the
information, tells us a portion of his information was gleaned from
a USA Today story by sportswriter Gary Mihoces.

Space considerations also meant another of John’s comments had
to be removed: “Latrobe is remembered as the home of Arnold Palmer,
top golfer, and former home of Rolling Rock, a great beer.”

OH, ZIPPO: Clayt Vecellio dropped off a Time magazine article
about a proposed museum for the multitude of items left behind at
the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Among them, of
course, are Zippo lighters, a picture of which was included with
the article. The fund-raising campaign, which hopes to raise ,100
million, is being led by former Joint Chiefs Chairman Colin
Powell.
