The Meadville man arrested in Bradford Tuesday as a fugitive from justice has been returned to Crawford County, where he is being held on charges relating to shooting another person in July.
Melvin Eugene Cummings, 45, was apprehended at 11:55 a.m. Tuesday by officers with state police, Bradford City police and agents of the FBI at an apartment at 11 E. Washington St.
Meadville City Asst. Police Chief Tom Liscinski explained Wednesday that Cummings had been accused in a July 15 shooting that happened at Theodore’s Bar in Meadville.
According to the Meadville Tribune, Cummings allegedly used a concealed handgun to shoot Phillip McClendon, injuring him in the hand. Liscinski said McClendon suffered a shot to the arm and was transported to Erie for medical treatment.
A woman at the bar was apparently injured by fragments of the bullet, suffering superficial wounds, Liscinski explained.
Cummings had been on the run since July, according to the Tribune.
“We had intelligence that told us he was headed south to Kentucky or Tennessee,” Liscinski said, explaining they asked the FBI for assistance when they suspected Cummings had crossed state lines.
Tips to their detectives and to the FBI led officers to look in Bradford, where Cummings was found Tuesday. He was taken into custody without incident.
He was arraigned before District Judge Dom Cercone on a fugitive from justice warrant Tuesday in Bradford and remanded to McKean County Jail in lieu of ,110,000 bail.
On Wednesday, Meadville City Police officers transported Cummings back to Meadville, where he was arraigned before District Judge William Chisholm on two counts each of aggravated assault and simple assault; and one count each of recklessly endangering another person, firearms not to be carried without a license, crimes committed with a firearm, former convict not to own firearms and discharge of a firearm into an occupied structure.
