WEIRD CROPS: It’s that time of year. Strange
things start growing!
Check these out.
Debbie Chilson of Bradford stopped by the other day with this
gigantic mushroom.
Debbie tells us she was on her way to Limestone, N.Y.,
when she stopped to allow her Great Dane to get a drink of water
from the creek. She saw a huge white object that she thought was a
big ball. Closer inspection, of course, revealed it to be this
giant mushroom which she thinks might be a puffball.
What will she do with it? “I’d like to stuff it,” she said.
Debbie must know a few things about mushroom because she added, “As
soon as I cut into it, I can tell by the color whether it’s
poisonous or not.”
It certainly would make a lot of hors d’oeuvres!
Meanwhile, we also had a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Morell Wilt of
Bradford with some really strange cucumbers.
Mrs. Wilt tells us they had grown the cukes from seeds –
but from the package expected them to be “straight eights.”
Obviously, somebody make a mistake somewhere because this is what
sprouted from the seeds!
Nonetheless, these odd-looking cukes are “good keepers,” are
tasty, and have smallish seeds.
We can verify this critique as we couldn’t resist a taste.
Our question, though, is … What in the heck are these
things?
