GAS PAINS: We will go for quite awhile without any calls about
the gas prices in Bradford and then, all of a sudden, we get a
spurt of them.
The size of the gap between our prices and others’ seems to be
the factor that starts the price reports.
Last week, we heard from Jack Gorton who wrote, “Today I drove
back from Burgess, Va., and many places such as Fredericksburg gas
was as low as ,2.52. They kinda have us where they want us when we
think ,2.52 is a great deal!”
A couple people called last week with prices: Mike Madden had
traveled to Ohio and, east of Erie near Cleveland, paid ,2.599; and
in North Kingsville, Ohio, ,2.55. Dawn Blaisdell reported gas at
Statesville, N.C., at ,2.49.
On Friday, we heard from Roxanne Cooper of Grover, N.C.: “Filled
up in Blacksburg, S.C., just two miles from my house last night for
,2.49 a gallon! Only took ,41 to fill up my Explorer!”
Sarah Bell of Pittsburgh, an Eldred native, dropped us an e-line
Thursday: “I’m not certain what your gas prices are in Bradford
these days, but down here in Pittsburgh, they are averaging between
,2.73 and ,2.85.”
“Less than a month ago, we were at ,2.95-,2.99 and then we
suddenly dropped to the above prices. I happened to drive further
south of Pittsburgh and did find ,2.69; unfortunately, I had a full
tank.”
Tony Falconi of Lewis Run tells us his wife and he had a couple
of surprises Saturday in Warren: “We filled up with gas. Price
279.9. The same gas we are paying six cents more in Bradford. Does
it cost that much a gallon for the same gas to transport it to
Bradford?”
Tony’s other surprise – and a suggestion to downtown planners,
perhaps – was a program, “Music in the Park,” sponsored by
Northwest Bank of Warren.
“Apparently the program runs all summer long with various
musical groups providing entertainment. On Saturday, we enjoyed the
music of the Sun Rays polka band. They played music of the ’50s
polkas and numerous other tunes. Big crowd attended.”
“It would be great if Bradford had a program such as Northwest
sponsors. I can remember the band concerts at the old public square
and in Hanley Park when I was a kid many years ago,” he writes.
