Dr. Stephen Ollock of Mainesburg claimed high overall honors in
the 21st annual Zippo Shoot Classic held over the weekend, hosted
by the Bradford Gun Club.
Ollock shot a 392 x 400 with 198 x 200 in singles, 98 x 100 in
doubles and 96 x 100 in the handicap event.
Kent Norton of Albion came in as runner-up with a 390 x 400
(196, 98 and 96).
Winning the veteran high overall trophy was Port Allegany’s Bill
Burleson with a 385 x 400.
The Junior-HOA trophy winner was Cody Davis of Shohola with a
366 x 400, and Carole Carney of Poland, Ohio, won the Lady-HOA
trophy with a score of 358 x 400.
In Saturday’s singles competition, Ray Lee of Odessa, Fla., had
the lone 200 x 200, while six shooters tied with 199 x 200. Shoot
offs were held Saturday and carried over into Sunday, resulting in
the following winners: Class AA Champ – Brian Whalen (Jamestown,
N.Y.); Class A – Allen Motosicky (New Kensington); Class B – Herm
Glover (Rixford); Class C – Ray Riden (Sagertown) and Class D – Ron
Yetzer (Bliss, N.Y.). Genevieve Davis of Shohola was named the
ladies singles champion, Jamie Short of Jamestown, N.Y., was the
Junior champion and Mike Mincel of West Falls, N.Y., was named
veteran champion.
For Sunday’s doubles event, David Hazelet of Amherst, N.Y.,
claimed the trophy with his 99 x 100. Also in the doubles, Ollock
was Class AA champ, Ralph Challingsworth (Kersey) was Class A
champ, Scott Huson (Meadville) was Class B winner, John Kaysa
(Horseheads, N.Y.) was first in Class C and Dean Jungo (Washington)
was first in Class D.
In the handicap event, John Mentlewski (Coulden, N.Y.) was first
with a 99 x 100, Ben Clepper (Freeport) won the yardage group 19 to
20, Colton Black (Sugar Grove) won the 21 to 22 yards group and
also was the junior champion, Curtis Robbins (Pine City, N.Y.) won
the 23 to 25 yards group and Ollock won the 26 to 27 yards group.
Joanne Mentlewski was named ladies champ and Burleson was named the
veteran champ.
A total of 224 shooters from the tri-state region competed in
the event, which was rain free with high humidity and calm winds,
allowing outstanding scores to be recorded.
On June 27, the BGC will hold its annual membership meeting and
family picnic. The picnic will begin at 6 p.m. with the meeting to
follow at 7 p.m.
The BGC is open 4-8 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sundays
for trap, skeet, sporting clays and 5-Stand shooting practice.
