WASHINGTON CROSSING – Former Bradford resident Ed Harris has
joined an elite group in central New Jersey with his selection as
winner of the Jack Millard Memorial Football Official of the Year
Award for 2006.
Although Harris currently resides in Pennsylvania, he has been a
highly regarded football official in New Jersey for the past 38
years and those years of service were recognized by the Delaware
Valley Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall
of Fame at their 45th Annual Awards Dinner held in Princeton, N.J.,
earlier this spring.
Harris has been a member of the Central Jersey Chapter of the
New Jersey High School Football Officials Association since 1969.
During his officiating career he worked state playoff games
including several state championship contests.
Prior to officiating football games, he ws a basketball official
for IAABO Board 193 from 1968-84 and for the baseball umpires
association from 1968-84.
Harris grew up in Bradford where he played football and
basketball in 1957 and 1958 for St. Bernard High School under the
coaching of the late Don Raabe.
Following graduation he attend Gannon University in Erie and St.
Bonaventure University in Olean, N.Y., where he graduated with a
Bachelor of Arts degree.
Harris received his teaching certification at Trenton State
College and earned his graduate degrees at Newark State College and
Cornell University.
A Senior Citizen Safety Coordinator, he was employed in the
Network of Victim Assistance in the Bucks County Juvenile Court as
a family mediator and for the state of Pennsylvania as a state
prison mediator from 1995-2005.
Harris has held numerous other positions, including 30 years of
employment for the state of New Jersey at Katzenbach School for the
Deaf in West Trenton.
He retired from the New Jersey Department of Education and moved
across the state line to Washington Crossing where he currently
resides.
