A sizable thunderstorm occurred at 3:30 p.m. Friday around the
Crosby, Wilcox, Smethport and St. Marys areas, causing about 1,500
customers in those places to lose power.
According to Allegheny Power, most damage was wind-based. There
were power wires down in Wilcox and Smethport and a telephone pole
broken in Crosby.
Crews were sent out to repair damage around the area, including
putting the wiring back up and fixing the broken pole.
Allegheny Power predicted power would be completely restored by
4 a.m. today. As of 9:10 p.m. Friday, power had been restored to
about 560 homes, leaving an estimated 940 still lacking power. Most
of the remaining outages were in the Wilcox area, according to
Allegheny Power representatives.
In addition, a flood statement was released for Elk County by
the National Weather Service. Areas that received heavy rain and
are prone to flooding may have experienced small flooding Friday, a
representative said.
There were also strong storms and some lightning in McKean
County, but no storms reached the service’s “severe” status.
Area residents can expect more of the same today with
thunderstorm severity similar to what it was Friday. Today will be
hazy with a 30 percent chance of afternoon showers and possible
thunderstorms, according to National Weather Service reports.
