THAT HALO: Ray Baruffalo had a quick answer to our recent
question about that ring around the sun.[neWLine]
He writes, “”Halos such as these are formed by the refraction of
light by ice crystals (which comprise cirrus clouds) high in the
atmosphere.””[neWLine]
“”This process is not unlike that which accounts for a rainbow,
except for the altitude. Such halos are more common, perhaps,
around the (bright) moon.[neWLine]
“”Both typically indicate a strong warm front moving toward the
viewer that is some ways off (perhaps two or even three days away).
The viewer can probably look for sometimes significant rain
arriving.””[neWLine]
So now we know![neWLine][neWLine]
V-GARDEN: John E. Rimer writes about our request for information
on those Victory Gardens of World War II:[neWLine]
“”I lived at 17 Seaward Ave. with my parents Lucille and Clyde
Rimer and my sister, Doris. Our house was right across the street
from Mrs. Graham’s.ð I was 5 years old at the time but I’ll never
forget taking care of our Victory Garden.[neWLine]
“”I remember walking down Seaward Avenue with my parents and our
garden tools and a watering can.[neWLine]
“”I am not sure but I think the Victory Gardens were located on
the hillside across from were the Byllye Lanes are now located. I
also remember collecting tin foil from cigarette packs and rolling
it up for the Armed Forces, and the red and blue tokens that I
think were used for gasoline and food.ð However, I am not
certain.[neWLine]
“”Do you know the answer?””[neWLine]
We do not know but bet many of our readers
do.[neWLine][neWLine]
80 YEARS: Imagine marking your 80th graduation from high school!
Wow! What an accomplishment![neWLine]
Ruth Buchanan Ross, now a resident at Sena-Kean Manor in
Smethport, graduated in 1927 from Mount Jewett High School. Winnie
Edinger, president of the Mount Jewett High School Alumni
Association, writes to tell us about Ruth’s milestone.[neWLine]
“”She has faithfully attended our alumni reunions in the past,
held over Memorial Day weekend at the Kane Country Club,”” Winnie
wrote last week.[neWLine]
“”Others in the class: Grace Olinger Caldwell, Walter Donahey,
Twila Bechman Engstrom, Gladys McConnell Gustafson, LeRoy Johnson,
Emerite Colquist Lauffer, William McClafferty, Edith Root, Anna
Peterson Turnquist, Lawrence Whalen, Mae Snapp Germain. All
deceased.””[neWLine]
Winnie adds: “”Unfortunately, our school will be closed at the
end of this school year, and all students will attend in
Kane.””
