BROOKVILLE – For the 9th straight year, Bradford High’s
opponents couldn’t come up with a way to stop the Owls at the
annual District 9 AAA track and field championship meet.
Wednesday at Brookville High School, junior Nick Johnson
spearheaded Bradford’s 76-point victory margin in the final team
standings. The Owls finished the meet with 162 points, while
Punxsutawney scored 86, DuBois 68, St. Marys 48 and Clearfield
19.
“This was our 9th straight District title,” said Tom Tessena,
Bradford coach. “We scored points in every event and hadðquite a
few outstanding performances.,”
Johnson led the Owls by scoring 19 points, which also earned him
the Jim Manners Award as the outstanding performer in the boys’
meet.
“Nick won the 110 high hurdles in the closest race of the day
over teammate Tyree Bennett by .03 seconds,” said Tessena. “Nick
ran 15.37 in the trials for the 6th best all time for Bradford.
Tyree ran 15.52 for the 8th best all time.ðIn the finals Nick edged
Tyree 15.52 to 15.55.ð
“Then Nick took 2nd in the 300 hurdles with a 41.36 which is 9th
all time.ð He then surprised us with a 3rd place in the triple jump
with a personal best of 39’8 1/2”. He also teamed up with Garrett
McEwen, Ben Walter, and Matt Teribery for 3rd in the 4×100 relay in
a season best time of 45.30.ð
“That gave him 19 points, which won the Manners Award,” Tessena
added.
Looking at other top performances, Tessena noted that, “Garrett
McEwen won the javelin (175’4″) and was 2nd in the shot with 52’3”.
This put him 7th on our all time list. Garrett finished with 15
points.
“Rob Bleem won the shot (54’3″), the discus with 160’10” and was
4th in the javelin with 161″3″ for a total of 18 points.ðð
“Vanere Maynard won the 400 and was 2nd in the 200 with a
personal best time of 22.68 which was 9th all time. He also ran on
the 1st place 4×400 relay team with Shroy Mukerjee, Colton
Langianese, and Rich Bartlebaugh.ð Vanere finished with 16
points.
“Mukerjee also won theð800 and was onðthe winning 4×800 relay
team with Jared Feura, Langianese, and Bartlebaugh for our only
triple winner.
“Feura took 3rd inðthe 1600 while Langianese was 2nd in the 400.
Matt Teribery had a great day with a 12’6″ jump in the pole vault
for 4th. He was the defending champ but due to a football injury
was unable to vault until last week.ð He did incredibly well with
just one meet. Matt hit 19’5” in the long jump for 5th, and ran the
100 in 11.63 for a 3rd place along with his leg on the 3rd place
4×100 relay.ð
“Sophomore Tyree Bennett won the high jump to go with his 2nd
place finish in the high hurdles.ð
“Dan Gonzalez just missed the state qualifier in the discus with
151’5” and CJ Mackey had a personal best throw of 125′ to grab 5th
in the discus.ðSophomore Steve Reinhadrt took 3rd in the shot.
“Our throwers scored an incredible 43 points in those three
throwing events,” Tessena pointed out.
“David Rivera had a good day winning the triple jump in 44’3′
and also took 2nd in the long jump. Ben Walter took 5th in both
sprints and also ran a strong leg in the 4×100 relay. Freshmen
Matthew and Michael White took 3rd and 4th in the 3200 run in
personal best times of 10:31 and 10:33. Evan Feura and John
Karrasch had season best times of 5:01 and 4:58 in the 1600 run.
Mike Marasco had his best time in the 800 meters with a 2:17.
Freshman Cody Nuzzo ran a personal best in the 400 with a 54.64 for
6th place and in the 200 with a 24.58 for 8th place.
“Everyone contributed today,” Tessena emphasized. “All of our
coaches have done a great job this year. Coach Stillman did a super
job with the jumps, Coach Kelley was outstanding with our sprinters
and Coach Macfarlane did a super job with our young distance crew.
Coach Mealy was outstanding with the throwers.ð
“We have 10 guys who qualified for states and I think we have
some good possibilities to medal. We have 10 days to get ready so
that will help,” he added.
