ON HIGH: Paul Costa not only can tell us more about the osprey
in the Smethport area but also sends along a photo.
He writes, “This osprey and his mate have fished Hamlin Lake and
the stretch of creek below the dam for the past five years or
so.”
THEY’RE BACK: Trudy Victory writes Sunday, “Spring is here! We
had our thunder and lightning storm on Monday night (April 23),
Thursday night (April 26) the peepers were out, and today Sunday I
saw my first hummingbird at the feeder. Maybe warmer weather is now
on the way. Just thought I would let you know.”
So, if you haven’t yet … get that hummingbird feeder cleaned up
and ready to go.
ROUTE 6: Cheryl R. Razey of Smethport, pointing to the many
Zippo sightings we’ve had over the years, asks for “equal time” for
Route 6 sightings.
We are happy to oblige. She writes, “In the May issue of Rider
magazine there is a wonderful article by Cindy Ross titled,
‘Northeast Getaway, Favorite Ride.'”
“As she writes about riding Pennsylvania’s Heritage Route 6,
which has been designated by National Geographic magazine as one of
America’s most scenic drives, she describes what she experienced in
a way that make you feel like you’re riding with her.
“You’ll read comments like ‘unspoiled natural wonders, charming
Victorian villages, history, museums, festival and folks who
conduct their lives as though “strangers are just friend they
haven’t met yet.'”
“She goes on to describe the beauty of the Allegheny Mountains
and on through ‘Victorian villages like Smethport, with its
pristine painted mansions and restored downtown.’
“I strongly recommend that people read the article. It’s nice to
have someone put into print what we take for granted every
day.”
