FIRE CALL: Judi Robinson tells us about something that happened
in Bradford in the 1960s that still gives her a
chuckle.[neWLine]
She writes, “”I got into the web site photo album and looking at
the Central Fire Station reminded me of an incident that happened
to my husband and me back in the early ’60s.[neWLine]
“”Hopefully, the picture shown is not the same station
today.[neWLine]
“”One Sunday evening about 9:30 p.m., we were driving down
Corydon Street and right by the fire station our car caught fire.
It was locked up tighter than a drum and we couldn’t get anyone to
answer the door.[neWLine]
“”After a few minutes a policeman came by and radioed the
station. The fireman drove the hook and ladder out of the station
then proceeded to put the fire out with an
extinguisher.[neWLine]
“”Everytime I think about it, I get the giggles.[neWLine]
“”Do they still lock the station up with no way for someone
outside to call for help? Of course now, everyone has cell phones
so I guess this is not a problem. Calling 911 is now an
option.””[neWLine][neWLine]
EMERY END: From the March 29, 1967, Era: “”Emery Hardware Co.
today is announcing its intention of going out of
business.””[neWLine]
“”One of the best-known hardware stores in the region, the
company was founded in September of 1876 by Lewis Emery Jr.
…[neWLine]
“”In the early 1900s, Ray VanNette was manager. In 1924, the
firm was incorporated as Emery Hardware Co., 45-47 Main St., with
Frank Mappes as manager. Mr. Mappes retired on June 1, 1945, and
Francis J. Quigley succeeded him. He served until the time of death
on Nov. 5, 1963.[neWLine]
“”Russell A. Ball, the current manager, said Emery Hardware
expects to remain in business for several weeks, pending the
clearance of merchandise now in stock. The company has seven men
and seven women as full-time employees and six part-time
employees.””[neWLine][neWLine]
STILL GOING: A reader tells us that Davidson’s Restaurant in
Lakewood, N.Y., is still going strong and continues to offer one of
the best fish fries in the region. An item we had recently implied
it was no longer in business. Even in very cold weather, our reader
reports, the people line up outside to wait for this exceptional
dinner.
