NEEDS HELP: If you’re a carpenter with some knowledge of antique
tools, Judy Yorks needs your help.
Judy, who is in charge of the school program at Crook Farm, is
looking for an individual who can talk about antique tools in
general and also about the tools they have in the farm’s carpenter
shop.
No physical helps is required.
Anyone interested in helping should contact the Bradford
Landmark Society.
GAS PAIN: Lee Sittig of Bradford writes, “Please, do not print
any more about our low gas prices. Every time you do, the price
goes up. Ha Ha … Thanks and have a nice day.” Yeah, we noticed
…
FISH FRY: Vinny and Margo from Phoenix write, “Howdy!ð Just
returned from a trip to Limestone, visiting the family ranch and
could not pass up reading the articles about great local fish fry
dinners.”
“We traveled from Phoenix, Ariz., to have a great fish fry at
Monte’s in Bradford.ðWe have not been able to find a good one
anywhere out west and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to have a
Western New York and Pennsylvania classic fish fry.”
SEARS KITS: Robin Kuleck in Ridgway, who works for the
Cooperative Extension Service, writes, “Great piece about the
trolley systems! You never know what you will learn about in
RTS.”
“This week I saw a piece on the Internet about early 20th
century home kits sold by Sears. I know our Cameron County Little
Museum was at first a school house purchased from Sears and the
concept of ‘pre-fab’ homes from nearly 100 years ago piqued my
interest.
“I Googled ‘Sears Homes’ and found the Sears archives that has
several pages of home kits, their prices and when they were
sold.
“My understanding is that the pieces were numbered and even
nails and enough paint for two coats came with the kit. Interested
readers might take a look at the website and explore their own home
and neighborhoods to see if they can identify Sears kit homes.
“Of course, many may have been modified over the years, but the
homes depicted had enough unique features to help you out. Attics
and basements would be places to look for the actual piece numbers
imprinted on the beams and rafters.
“Perhaps some of the older crowd would share their knowledge of
this architectural history!”
