MORE SNOW: Turns out snow in July in Bradford is more common
than we thought.[neWLine]
Era sports editor Joe Vinelli is among those who recalls summer
snow: “”I believe it was 1977 and I was attending Jim Satalin’s
basketball camp at St. Bonaventure University. As I walked across
campus early one morning it was snowing.””[neWLine]
We also heard from Linda Hedden: “”I, too, remember wearing a
winter coat to work in July. I want to say it was 1976, the year we
celebrated the Bicentennial but I do remember the actual 4th of
July weekend that year being beautiful so it might have been 1975
that was so cold in July.””[neWLine]
“”I’m living in CT now where the winters are quite a bit milder
but right now it’s still cooler than usual here for this time of
year.[neWLine]
“”Just for the record, I don’t miss the winters back in Bradford
and Olean but would rather drive in the snow there as they don’t
know how to remove it – much less drive in it – out
here![neWLine][neWLine]
SISTER STONES: Seems like eons ago now, but it was just last
month when we showed readers an illustration of what was called
“”The Twin Sisters”” natural stone formation.[neWLine]
Our information had suggested it was in Bradford but, not
surprisingly, we learned it is in Rock City Park.[neWLine]
Cindy Smith, who with her husband Dale owns the park, tells us
that these “”Twin Rocks”” are now called “”The Three Sisters”” and
can still be seen at the park.[neWLine]This huge rock formation, in
fact, is featured in the Allegheny National Forest tourism
brochure.[neWLine]Rock City Park, Cindy pointed out, has been a
well-known park for 100 or more years.[neWLine]A photo of this rock
formation is on the park’s website, “” rockcitypark.com “”. Better
yet, see it in person when the park opens for the
season.[neWLine][neWLine]
ONE MORE: A reader phoned to add another place to that list of
great fish fries. “”The Davidsons”” in Lakewood, N.Y., on
Chautauqua Lake was one of those legendary spots where people would
stand in line every Friday for a fish fry.[neWLine][neWLine]
TODAY’S QUOTE: “”The Framers gave us a free press as the final
safety net if all other checks and balances in the three branches
of government should fail,”” said George Washington University law
professor Jonathan Turley, 2006.
