STATE COLLEGE – Powered by first- and second-place medals in two
relays and Kristin Franklin’s win in the 50 back, the Bradford YMCA
Cadet girls captured second place in their age division at the
East-West Pennsylvania YMCA Championship Meet on Saturday.
The relay team of Franklin, Jessica Buchheit, Ann Confer and
Kyleigh Anderson also broke two records they set just a week ago at
the West District meet. A third record fell when Confer broke the
50 fly record during the state meet.
The four teammates swam to a first-place finish in the 200
medley relay with a time of 2:15.15, breaking the mark they set
just last week at 2:15.95. Later in the meet the same four girls
took second place in the 200 free relay with a time of 2:01.20,
breaking their record of 2:01.68, also set last week.
In individual events Franklin took first place in the 50 back
with a time of 32.99, just missing the record she set last week
(32.94). Anderson finished seventh in the 100 free (1:04.90) and
Buchheit earned 10th place in the 50 free (30.22). Confer took 12th
place in the 50 fly with a time of 33.47, breaking the record time
of 33.53 previously set by April Torrey on Feb. 14, 2004.
Even though Bradford’s Cadet team consisted of only four
swimmers, their scores with first- and second-place relay finishes,
Franklin’s first and individual place points for Anderson, Buchheit
and Confer earned them the second place trophy for the Cadet girls
division (9-10) in the state meet. York and York County YMCA was
first in that division.
In the Prep division, five Bradford swimmers competed Saturday.
Chelsea Kahle finished eighth in the 200 free, 12th in the 50 back
and 16th in the 200 free relay along with teammates Rachel Confer,
Kayla Funk and Irene Rice. Matt Giudice finished 15th in the 200
free.
In the Junior division Sunday, Adam Barnes finished 14th in the
200 free with a time of 1:57.25, which broke the record that he had
set just last week at the West District meet (1:57.92). Barnes also
finished 14th in the 100 back. Amanda Slavinski finished 18th in
the 200 free.
Katie Slavinski was the lone Senior competing for Bradford on
Sunday. She finished 16th in the 50 free.
The East-West championship meet was held at Penn State’s McCoy
Natatorium. More than 1,400 swimmers representing 70 YMCAs from the
state competed in the two-day event in four different age
divisions.
