SEGER LINK?: Mike Wittman of St. Marys writes, “On Bob Seger’s
new CD, ‘Face The Promise,’ the title song called ‘Face The
Promise,’ he sings this verse:
‘I’m tired of this river, these nothin’ lights
‘I’m small towned out, I need city lights
‘So long Allegany, so long Olean,
‘I need to face the promise of the Promised Land.’
“Does anyone know what might be the connection between Seger and
Olean?”
GOOD TIMES: Barney Snyder writes, “In today’s column Don Hunt
asks who would want to give up what we have today to relive the
’50s and ’60s. I’d do it in a heart beat. Not so much for the
2-cent newspaper and the cheap gasoline.”
“I’d do it for the lifestyle, the safer atmosphere, not having
to lock the doors when we left the house not having to worry about
sexual predators and on and on and on.
“I now live in Tucson, Ariz., and in this urban area crime is a
major problem. Perhaps the Bradford area does not have such
problems and that is why Don likes it the way it is now.
“I would not want to be a kid growing up in today’s world. It
was simpler back then. We could occasionally sneak down to
Limestone and buy beer when we were 16 and not too much fuss was
raised. We didn’t have the health issues we have now days. All I
can say is those were the days. I’d go back and relive them in a
heart beat.”
GAS PAIN: Rose Bennardo Zavagno writes, “Just want to make you
people feel better. Gas is $3.25 a gallon here in our great
California area but I cringe every time we need gas. It’s only
money.”
THAT CANNON: Robert Ward of Wellsboro writes, “I would like to
let Pat Franco know that my father and I searched for the same
Lafayette cannon. It was back in the 1920s when I was a young boy.
The story was the same as Pat related.”
“Also in the 1920s, a few friends and myself walked south along
the B&O railroad tracks past Droneys. We came to an abandoned
store close to the tracks. We found old letters in the store
addressed to either Hollenback or Hollenbeck, Pa. There were no
houses in the area. Could that have been a ghost town?”
