KANE -ðTwo people were injured in pile-up early Saturday evening
on U.S. Route 219, just north of its intersection with U.S. Route
6, in Hamlin Township. The accident led to two other crashes in the
same vicinity within a few minutes of each other.
In the original crash, all three vehicles involved – a
sport-utility vehicle driven by Nathan Mealy, 26, of Kane, an SUV
driven by Michele Lee Lakanka, 37, of Kane, and a pick-up truck
driven by Lucas Lekanka, 37, also of Kane -ðwere northbound on
Route 219 just after 6 p.m., according to Kane-based state
police.
The truck was being used to pull the Lekanka SUV from a snow
bank on the east side of the road, when the Mealy SUV went out of
control and rear-ended the Lekanka SUV. The Mealy SUV went on to
hit the side of the truck as it was spinning out of control, police
said.
Mealy, who suffered minor injuries, and Michele Lekanka, who
suffered moderate injuries, were both taken to Kane Community
Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. There
was no information on their conditions Sunday night.
At about the same time, police said, a car driven by Colin
McGuire, was also northbound on Route 219 near the location of the
crash when it went out of control while trying to avoid it.
The McGuire car struck a snow bank on the west side of the road.
McGuire was not injured, and there was no damage to the car.
Moments later, an SUV driven by Scrubb Younes, 38, of Kane, was
also northbound on Route 219, trying to slow down to avoid the
crash, when it also went out of control and traveled into a snow
bank, rolling over.
Younes was not injured, but there was minor damage to his
SUV.
The Mount Jewett Volunteer Fire Department and EMS assisted at
the scene.
No charges were reported by police in any of the incidents.
