Ridgway’s Anthony Tettis wins heavyweight title

RIDGWAY – Anthony Tettis of Ridgway won the heavyweight division
of the USA Eastern Regional Boxing championship held in Pensaukin,
N.J., on Feb. 9-11.

Tettis defeated Dorset Barnwell in an upset Feb. 11.

Barnwell, from Washington D.C., was the favorite in the
tournament getting to the finals on a knockout trail.

Barnwell weighed in at 201 pounds, while the underdog Tettis
weighed in at 188 pounds.

The 13-pound weight difference did not stop the 20-year-old
Tettis from quickly taking command of the fight with devastating
combinations to the head and body.

Tettis won all for rounds on the judges’ score cards. In the
fourth round Tettis sent Barnwell through the ropes with a series
of blows for an eight count.

Tettis boxes out of the Ridgway Boxing Club which is under the
AMA Regional Boxing Commision and governed by USA Boxing Inc. based
in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Tettis will now advance to the USA Nationals in June which will
lead to the Olympic team box-offs in August. The Nationals will be
held at the Olympic training camp in Colorado Springs. The USA
Eastern Region is considered one of the most competitive regions in
the country.

Rocco Tettis, a 178-pound light heavyweight in the Ridgway
Boxing Club, placed third in the tournament. Rocco’s fight was
stopped because of a nose bleed.

Both Tettis brothers advanced to the Eastern Region Championship
by winning the AMA Championship held in the Pittsburgh area over
the past couple of weeks.

The Ridgway Boxing Club operates from donations from the
community and is housed in a space donated by Larry Buehler of
Ridgway.
