Students in Mrs. Sue Zirkle’s class at the Otto-Eldred
Elementary School used the Newspapers In Education program for
language arts, current events and comprehension skills, as well as
learning the parts of the newspaper.
ðMrs. Zirkle said the NIE program is, “an interesting way to
enforce lessons taught in many different subject areas.” She said
the first few weeks the students learned the parts of the newspaper
and different newspaper terms.
Then, Mrs. Zirkle had the students go on a scavenger hunt
through the newspaper answering questions concerning the news of
the day. One of the favorite activities, she said, was the use of
the highlighter, finding parts of speech. Nouns and verbs were
great favorites, she said.
The class also learned about subjects and predicates, using the
sentences in the newspaper. She also had her students clip articles
from the paper and answer questions about that article.
We are pleased to have Mrs. Zirkle and her students as part of
the Newspapers In Education program at The Bradford Era and thank
the employees of the Eldred Division of Ethan Allen for their
sponsorship.
Nearly 100 teachers in our circulation area are participating in
the program, co-sponsored by The Era and area businesses,
organizations and industries.
Using the newspaper in the classroom setting enriches the
learning experience for the student.
