A thank you to some readers who phoned The Era recently to give
us the list of the nine Bradford Lady Owls basketball players who
reached the 1,000-point mark.
On Feb. 2, Whitney Cline reached the milestone in a win over
Clearfield. I want to congratulate her on the accomplishment. She
joins a very elite group of Lady Owls.
Here’s a note passed on to me from Ron Kloss, who covered
Bradford’s game with St. Marys last week.
Remember, Cline needed 17 points coming into that game and
scored 14, leaving her three shy.
It seems the public address announcer after the game
congraulated her on being that close and knew she would accomplish
her goal. A real show of class by the people in St. Marys,
according to Ron.
The all-time leading scorer is Lori Robinson with 1,787 points.
In second place is Kelly Peterson with 1,401.
The rest of the list includes Khris Kaber (1,261), Carol Thiele
(1,124), Daly Ann Fuller (1,109), Sara Eddy (1,049), Sue Martin
(1,025) and Brandi Karhoff (1,015).
Cline, by the way, has already moved into 8th place after
scoring 15 points in Wednesday’s win over previously unbeaten
Coudersport. She now has 1,021 points.
Another thank you to two of the 25 Pittsburgh Penguins’ fans in
the Lewis Run area.
A couple of them contacted The Era the other night to tell us
the Buffalo Sabres aren’t the only hockey team in the area people
like to read about.
The much-improved Penguins have generated renewed interest among
their fans.
We’ll make sure a Penguins story is in the paper the morning
after a game.
The NHL said 3,193,093 fans were in attendance for the 187 games
in January. It was the greatest January in the NHL’s 89-year
history.
An average of 17,075 per game – which represented 92.3 percent
capacity at the 30 rinks – was 1.7 percent higher than last year,
the previous-best January, when there was an average of 16,785.
Brian Hoffman, last season’s Class A football coach of the year,
is leaving West Middlesex for the job at Hubbard (Ohio) High
School.
Hoffman graduated from Hubbard in 1989. Last season, he coached
West Middlesex to a 15-1 record and the PIAA Class A runner-up
spot.
West Middlesex defeated Coudersport before losing to Southern
Columbia in the Class A championship.
Upper Perkiomen senior Zack Kemmerer has become Pennsylvania’s
leader in career high school wrestling wins.
Kemmerer, last year’s PIAA Class AAA champion at 135 pounds, won
four matches last week to raise his career total to 182
victories.
