The Lady Falcons came in undefeated, but they didn’t get to go
home that way as Bradford upset sixth-ranked (Class A) Coudersport
45-37 Wednesday in non-league girls basketball on Senior Night at
the Owls’ Nest.
“Tonight was senior night, and our five seniors played great,”
said Doug Lloyd, Bradford coach. “Coudy is a heck of a team. They
were very active and never gave up, There is a reason they were
undefeated. This is a big win for us.
“Congratulations to our seniors and their parents. The girls
have had great careers here. Our records have gotten better and our
schedules have gotten tougher. They are five great kids who we are
really going to miss next year.”
Recognized before the game were seniors Whitney Cline, Nicole
Siffrinn, Kayla Murphey, Britani VanScoter and Meghan Perschke.
Coudersport (20-1) drew first blood on a shot from under the
basket by Jessica Wilson. This was one of only three leads the Lady
Falcons would enjoy for the duration of the game.
Bradford answered with back-to-back shots by Cline and
VanScoter, putting the Lady Owls up 4-2.
Coudersport added two baskets and a foul shot, as the Lady
Falcons regained the lead again. Bradford responded with three
baskets, one by Tricia Copeland, one by Shelly Fuhrman and one by
Cline, to take the lead once more, making it Bradford 10-7 at the
end of the first quarter.
Cline also opened the scoring in the second quarter with a
two-pointer. Fuhrman hit nothing but net for two and Copeland added
two on a shot from the right side.
Coudersport’s Wilson hit another basket, bringing Coudy to
within three, 16-13.
Lady Owl Siffrinn hit her second foul shot for another Bradford
tally.
Bradford got the ball back, but it was stolen by Coudersport’s
Maureen McCusker, who went straight down court and put it in for
another two, trimming Bradford’s lead to two at halftime,
17-15.
Wilson put two on the board for the Lady Falcons to open the
third quarter, tying the game.
Bradford worked the ball back into its territory and a pass from
Fuhrman found Katie White, who made her shot and put Bradford up
again.
That shot was answered by Coudy’s Kristy Kamper, who missed her
first attempt but grabbed her own rebound and put it up again, this
time sinking it for the score.
Furhman hit another jumper, but Coudersport’s Kamper and Wilson
found the basket one after the other, putting Coudersport up
23-21.
Bradford tied the game at 23 on foul shots by Fuhrman, and then
began a scoring run.
Cline hit two baskets and a foul shot, VanScoter added a basket
and Siffrinn sank two foul shots, putting Bradford up 32-23, with
Coudersport’s last point of the quarter scored on a foul shot by
Wilson.
Coudersport again came within a basket midway through the fourth
quarter as the Lady Falcons sank five baskets to Bradford’s one;
three by Kamper, one by Jordan Bright and Kelly McVay’s
three-pointer, the only one of the evening.
Bradford fought back, however. Copeland sank two foul shots.
White stole the ball and fired it cross-court to Cline, who put it
through the net. White then added a basket of her own, putting the
Lady Owls ahead 41-33.
Bradford’s remaining four points were scored on foul shots,
while Coudersport’s Wilson and Kamper sank baskets for the Lady
Falcons’ last four points as Bradford nailed down the 47-35
win.
“What it comes down to is the eight players I have, play well
together,” Lloyd noted. “All eight contribute; Nikki finds people
when they’re open. Kayla, Shelly and Meghan all do a good job on
the press. Meghan also does a good job rebounding.
“Britani VanScoter has done a really good job for us off the
bench this year. It makes it tough to concentrate on one player,
and that really helps us,” Lloyd added.
Wilson led Coudersport with 17 points, while Kamper added nine
tallies.
“This was a good game, a good test for us,” said Brian Green,
Coudersport coach. “I was happy with our defense, but we didn’t
shoot or rebound well.
“Our bread and butter is forcing the point guard to turn the
ball over. Nikki Siffrinn is the first girl this year to handle
that pressure. My hat is off to her.
“Doug’s done a great job with these girls. We would love another
chance to play them, if we had the opportunity,” he added.
Bradford (15-6) travels to DuBois on Friday for its last league
contest.
