YOUNGSVILLE – A Sugar Grove man died as a result of a
two-vehicle crash at 3:05 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. Route 6 in the
Youngsville Borough in Warren County.
According to Youngsville Borough Police, a tractor-trailer
driven by Steven Sharp, 45, of Sugar Grove, and a truck driven by
Eric Gustafson, 28, of Ridgway, were traveling east on Route 6. The
truck slowed down for traffic that was turning, and the
tractor-trailer attempted an abrupt stop to avoid hitting the
truck.
Police said the tractor-trailer was unable to stop, and two
steel ingots weighing about 34,000 pounds that were being hauled on
the semi-trailer of the tractor-trailer became loose and slid
forward, penetrating the bulkhead of the trailer and the cab of the
tractor-trailer.
The ingots hit Sharp from behind, police said, pinning him
inside the tractor-trailer.
Police said Sharp died as the result of blunt force trauma and
was pronounced dead at the scene by Warren County Deputy Coroner
Stanley Taydus. No one else was injured in the accident.
The tractor-trailer had severe damage and was towed from the
scene, according to police, and the truck had disabling damage and
was towed from the scene.
Police were assisted at the scene by the Youngsville and Garland
fire departments, the Pennsylvania State Police, Transcare and the
Pennsylvania Public Utilities Commission-Motor Enforcement Carrier
Division.
