MEMORIES: Elmer Delucia dropped us a note about the upcoming
Tribute to Louis Armstrong concert Friday at the University of
Pittsburgh at Bradford.
“This Friday will be special to me,” Elmer said. “I worked many
years and parties at the Glendorn Estate.”
Elmer said that along with Armstrong, Victor Borge and Ella
Fitzgerald performed at Glendorn. When Ella sang there in the
1980s, Elmer had a chance to talk with her.
“She said what a beautiful place Glendorn is. I received a
signed picture of her and one of her records.”
Elmer also said he met one of Ella’s family members, too.
“They were just wonderful.”
Jazz trumpet virtuoso Marcus Belgrave hits the stage at 7:30
p.m. in the Bromeley Family Theater.
Tickets are on sale through the Bradford Creative and Performing
Arts Center. They are also available at the box office Friday
night.
NOT QUITE RIGHT: In Wednesday’s RTS, we gave the answers to a
quiz on quotations featured in Pennsylvania magazine.
The quote was “Not fair – I pitched a perfect game for 12
innings and still lost it.” The answer to #6 should be Harvey
Haddix, not Harry.
Also, Harvey pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates in that game,
not the Phillies.
Thanks to John DelMonego and Richard Shirey for setting the
record straight. Guess we aren’t “batting a thousand,” are we?
SMALL WORLD: Harriet Francisco Armstrong was amazed when she
read a recent article about Marian Bromeley turning 100.
The article mentioned Mrs. Bromeley’s work after she and her
husband bought the Belvidere mansion outside of Belmont, N.Y.
“At this point I was beside myself … I grew up in Belmont, knew
of the “mansion” well, (and estate) and even rode horses on the
farm adjacent to it with a friend of mine. We often wondered of the
family that had now (then) occupied the house off and on. Where
they were from, I hadn’t known … I was just a young teenager. ..
Now I know…”
TODAY’S QUOTE: “Tell the truth even if it hurts, especially if
it hurts,” said Hubert Beuve-Mery, founder, Le Monde, 1989.
