OLD BEAR: An old bear from McKean County apparently wandered too
far from home and was killed by a hunter this past bear season in
Sullivan County in northeast Pennsylvania.
Edward Harrington of Eldred stopped by with a clipping from the
Dec. 7 edition of the Sullivan Review, DuShore, Pa.
“Wayward bear harvested” said the headline over a photo of a
hunter with not just the bear but a nine-point buck he had
bagged.
“Harry Sweeney shot this bear (298 pounds, estimated live
weight) Nov. 28 in Laporte Township. At the check station, he found
out the tags in the bear’s ears were put on in the 1980s in McKean
County west of Potter County. That means the bear was about 24
years old, dodging bullets and vehicles during its trip east.”
WONDERING: We got this note from Ron Homan: “I am curious as to
whether Dresser still offers scholarships in engineering to McKean
County graduates. Back in my day (1956) they gave four scholarships
to the University of Cincinnati. One was from Kane (me), one from
Bradford (Darryl Cornelius, who I believe had been a quarterback on
the Owls football team), and two from around Eldred (Don Lilly and
Bill Woods).
“The significant part of their scholarship was the ability to
‘co-op,’ i.e we went to school for seven weeks, and worked at
Dresser for seven weeks all year around.
“Although we took give years to graduate that way, I was able to
put myself through college. With four sisters and one brother that
would have been an impossible dream without Dresser’s help.
“Although when I graduated in 1961 I ended up working for
another company I have always been grateful to them and hope they
continue to offer the program.”
NOT QUITE: Richard Boyajian offers a correction to a recent
item: “Dec. 21 is not the shortest day of the year. It is the day
with the least daylight!”
KEEPING TIME: We also got this note the other day: “I am very
happy to have the clock on the town hall working and not sure who
gets the credit for it. It would be nice to have the clock replaced
at the Post Office. The town clock works for me as when it was not
working, I relief on the Post Office clock. Now I have the town
clock.”
