The Bradford Salvation Army’s Capt. Henry Weigner was seriously
injured in a collision between the church’s van and a log truck on
Thursday – and the church is putting out a cry for help to bring
Christmas to the area’s needy without one of their own leaders this
holiday season.
The accident occurred at 2:45 p.m. Thursday on State Route 66,
two miles south of Kane in Wetmore Township. Weigner, 38, of
Bradford, was driving the Salvation Army van, traveling south on
Route 66 when it went out of control going around a left hand
curve, police said.
A 2001 Peterbilt log truck, driven by James Myers, 39, of Mount
Jewett, was traveling north when the Weigner van spun sideways into
his lane of traffic where the two collided, said police.
According to Capt. Deborah Weigner, the van was totaled in the
accident. A passenger in the van, Arthur Holland Sr., 55, of
Eldred, suffered moderate injuries in the accident.
Weigner and Holland were taken to Kane Community Hospital.
Weigner was reported to have serious injuries while Holland
sustained moderate injuries, added police.
The Kane-based state police were assisted at the scene by the
Kane Volunteer Fire Department and ambulance.
Deborah Weigner said Friday that her husband has been taken to
Hamot Medical Center and is hurt very badly. She said due to his
injuries, he will not be able to conduct duties such as ringing the
bell at the kettles, distributing food or picking up and delivering
food items.
Because of this, she asks that anyone available come forward to
help them with their holiday food distribution, bell ringing or any
help they can commit to them.
Weigner also said that food items that were in the back of the
van were damaged beyond salvage. Those items included spaghetti
sauce and cereal, among other items.
She asks that those interested come forward by calling the
Salvation Army to find out their needs.
