STAY HOME: This is the start of one of the biggest shopping
weekends of the year. So here’s a thought: Stay home. Bradford –
downtown, East Bradford, and Foster Brook – has many interesting
stores to browse for Christmas gifts.
Sometimes, you might have to search a little harder to find them
but they are there. And remember – free parking.
Besides, you get the satisfaction of assisting the merchants who
are here all year, supporting the community in many, many ways. If
you’ve ever been part of a charity event, you’d know how generous
these merchants are with gifts of many kind.
Just hope some of you might want to return the favor.
THIS, TOO: If that’s not enough to keep your shopping dollars in
Bradford, you might want to consider the hazards of driving in the
winter – especially with the recent forecast.
If you must hit the road, consider these tips from the Emergency
Management Agency:
* Avoid driving during a winter storm or blizzard warning. If
travel is necessary, do it in daylight and do not travel alone.
* Keep cars and other vehicles fueled and in good repair.
* Make sure batteries, ignition systems, thermostats, lights,
flashers, exhausts, heaters, brakes, defrosters and tires of
vehicles are working. Check antifreeze, windshield washer fluid and
oil levels.
* Pack a shovel, ice scraper, flashlight, battery-powered radio,
extra batteries, water, snacks, hats and mittens, blankets, tow
chains or ropes, road salt and sand, booster cables, emergency
flares and a fluorescent distress flag in vehicles.
* Drive only at speeds dictated by conditions and increase
distances between vehicles.
* Carry a cell phone.
Let us add one thing to carry along: kitty litter. It’s helped
us more than once!
TODAY’S QUERY: Remember getting those codliver oil pills rammed
down your throat when you were a kid?
A reader writers: “Back in the 1950s at Hobson Place School all
students had to take a codliver oil pill every day. I’m sure this
wasn’t just my little elementary school. What was the reason for
the need and why is the need not their anymore Could you please ask
