Ms. Abbey is using The Bradford Era in her health classes as
part of the Newspapers In Education program, sponsored by our
newspaper with funding also provided by WalMart Supercenter and
Walker-Marshall Insurance Co. in Bradford.[neWLine]
Her class is one of over 90 in our circulation area using the
Newspapers In Education program to promote literacy through the use
of the daily newspaper in the classroom.[neWLine]
As you’ll read in the article, these seventh-graders were
photographed studying an article, “”Program Discusses Disaster
Cooperation,”” which appeared in the Nov. 10 edition. The students
discussed how it would affect them if there would be an influx of
people from large cities in the event of a natural disaster or
terrorist attack.[neWLine]
They also discussed preparation of a home disaster kit and used
the newspaper to learn new vocabulary words.[neWLine]
The students use the newspaper as a tool for discussion of
current weather, health issues, entertainment, drug/alcohol and
other matters of public concern.[neWLine]
Ms. Abby prepares her classes by discussing the sections of the
newspaper and what each contains. She asks her students to write
down four details in each article they read to explain what the
writer is trying to tell the reader.[neWLine]
“”I really like using the newspaper because it is a great way to
show the kids everything going on in the world, how it affects
their lives, and it prompts lots of discussion,”” Ms. Abbey
said.[neWLine]
Nearly 100 teachers in our circulation area are participating in
the program, co-sponsored by The Era and area businesses,
organizations and industries. Using the newspaper in the classroom
setting enriches the learning experience for the student and, of
course, helps educate a new generation of newspaper
readers.[neWLine]
