Local state police agencies were busy during the first day of
buck season on Monday, investigating the death of one hunter and
the accidental shooting of another.
According to Kane-based state police, a West Elizabeth man
suffered a fatal heart attack while hunting Monday morning in
Wetmore Township.
According to Kane-based state police, Robert Karpeal, 56, of
West Elizabeth, was in contact with family during the early hours
Monday, but was discovered about 10 a.m. by his brother – who was
not identified by police – in a wooded area behind the Kane
Drive-In off Detrick Road, north of U.S. Route 6.
The Kane Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance assisted at the
scene.
Police said Karpeal suffered a “cardiac arrest” while hunting,
but did not cite the coroner or report whether Karpeal had been
taken to a medical facility.
There was no further information available Monday afternoon.
Meanwhile, Ridgway-based state police said John Katcher, 59, of
Baden, was accidentally shot by his own gun at 3:30 p.m. in the
Owls Nest area of State Game Lands 28 in Highland Township, Elk
County.
Police said Katcher was hunting in that area when his hunting
rifle accidentally discharged, shooting his right foot.
Katcher was treated for his injuries at Elk Regional Health
Center in St. Marys, according to police, adding the Pennsylvania
Game Commission was contacted about the incident.
