St. Lawrence rallies past Panthers

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – St. Lawrence shot 60 percent from the floor in
the second half and rallied to a 79-72 season-opening victory over
Pitt-Bradford at the Brockport State Classic on Friday.

St. Lawrence was just 9-for-24 in the first half, but sank
14-of-23 in the second to pull out the win.

The Panthers led the game at halftime, 37-35.

“They (St. Lawrence) shot it well in the second half,” conceded
Andy Moore, Pitt-Bradford head coach. “They shot 60 percent and I
think we shot 36.

“It was a tie game with 40 seconds to go and we missed a
chippie,” Moore recalled. “Then they came down and made a 3 with 20
seconds to go. We couldn’t score and had to foul down the
stretch.”

St. Lawrence put four players in double figures in the win. Tom
Wopperer (20 points), Tyler Shaver (13), Andy Hoercher (11), Matt
Blue (11) and Bela Vonnak (17) led the way.

Leading the scoring for UPB were Dan Thomas (20), Jon Hannon
(19) and Ryan Race (10 points).

Also for the Panthers, Shawn Spindler contributed eight points
and nine boards, while Thomas dished out four assists.

“We did some good things,” Moore pointed out. “We didn’t turn
the ball over much – we only had 10 turnovers, which is solid. We
also shot it great at the foul line (26-for-29, 90 percent).

“But, we had a lot of good looks and didn’t knock them down. We
couldn’t separate ourselves.”

The Panthers can bounce back today when they face SUNY Brockport
at 4 p.m.
