TUNE IN: Turn on National Public Radio today to hear Bradford
author Cheryl Bazzoui reviewing a book by a St. Marys woman on the
program, “Bookmark.”
The program will air at 4:30 p.m. today and again at 9:34 a.m.
Sunday on WPSU, State College.
The book is “Just a Whisper Away,” written by Edie Hanes of St.
Marys. Her pen name is Laurel Nichols.
“Bookmark” is an NPR program which features books with some
Pennsylvania angle. In this case, Edie has two: She’s from St.
Marys and the book is set in the logging industry of northwest
Pennsylvania.
Cheryl tells us the book has references to Bradford airport, elk
sighting in Benezette, icy road conditions on U.S. Route 219 – “and
a lot of idiosyncrasies that would be familiar to us.”
Cheryl said she considers Edie’s book as something of “a
postcard from western Pennsylvania to the world,” adding that her
books have been published in Europe, South America and the Far
East.
You can find NPR at 100.9 FM in Bradford and 90.1 just outside
of Bradford.
A REMINDER: Speaking of books, a reminder today that Bradford
Area Public Library has been in the process of expanding its local
author collection.
The library has been gathering books written by people connected
to the Bradford area – born, educated or spent much of their life
in the area – as a way to celebrate and preserve a local literary
heritage.
Librarian Linda Newman tells us it has copies of most of David
Poyer’s novels but also works by Dorothy Hosford, David McKain,
Richard Shrubb, Bill Robertson, Marguerite Eyssen, Kevin Forsythe,
Richard Blessing, Susie Coffman, Chris Mackowski, and others.
OH, ZIPPO: Two Zippo sightings in unusual places:
The Washington Post carried a feature story earlier this year
about Lewis H. Lapham who was about to step down after 28 years as
the editor at Harper’s magazine.
“Lewis H. Lapham flips up the top of his Zippo lighter, ignites
another Parliament and inhales deeply,” says the opening
paragraph.
And get this: Heather Faulkner sent us a photo she clipped from
People magazine a couple months ago with this description, “Summer
Fling. Mayer and Jennifer Love Hewitt. They dated for a few months
in 2002.” Heather has really good eyes; She pointed to John Mayer’s
T-shirt which says “Zippo Swap Meet” – and what looks to us like
the year 2001.
