Kelly: School district could get $62,623 from food service program

At Monday night’s Bradford Area School Board meeting, directors
and those on hand learned the school district was able to obtain
$62,623 in revenue through the food service program.

The information was announced by Business Manager Kathy
Kelly.

While Kelly made the announcement, Jon Hackett, general food
manager of food services for Sodexho, the company that supplies the
district with meals on a daily basis, received awards for the most
improved meal participation and the most improved client revenue
for the year in Sodexho’s Eastern Region.

“Each year we recognize people doing an outstanding job in a
number of categories,” said Sodexho Eastern Region District Manager
Chris Mangio. “Jon was able to increase participation by more than
7 percent in the past school year. He also increased the revenue
substantially.

“We have an outside company go in to conduct audits, measuring
safety and he received 100 on both audits – that is very difficult
to do,” she added. “He does an awesome job in the New York and
North Pennsylvania district.”

Kelly added the revenue received by the district has enabled
them to replace and invest in newer items such as the Bradford Area
High School cafeteria and future projects, including a new cooler
and dishwasher at George G. Blaisdell Elementary School – with no
use of tax dollars.

In other business, the directors received copies of 30 new or
revised policies to be voted on at their regular December
meeting.

The new student council representative was introduced. Shroy
Mukerjee, student council president, presented a number of
announcements regarding the activities and accomplishments at the
high school.

Among many other announcements, he gave reports on completed
activities by different organizations, including DECA and the Civic
Conscious Championship for Kids in Iraq program; the fact the Key
Club helped with Kiwanis Kapers; and that progress is being made on
the “Black Hole T-shirts” through the high school Student
Council.

He also gave a wrap-up of the different teams at the school and
their accomplishments, including the varsity football team going to
the District 9 Class AAA championships on Friday in Clarion, as
well as the Class AA District 9 doubles girls tennis team achieving
champion status this year.

In other news, Assistant Superintendent Katharine Pude announced
a presentation given by teachers Cindy Murphy and Carol Gingerich,
who were able to attend a state technology conference where they
traded information about teaching techniques with others.

Murphy showed video clips of her students in the classrooms and
how they use new calculators and “smartboards” as part of their
class studies.

The calculators enable students who have “down-time” or have
completed their work to use certain software to challenge their
mathematical skills. They may be considered “games” but still do
the job of challenging each student, said Murphy.

She also described the “smartboard” as one that allows students
to be interactive with a touch screen either in front of the class
or by using remote controls to answer questions posed on the
screens.

Gingerich showed Power Point presentations made by students
discussing certain science related subjects. She also played a
presentation created on an iPod by Daniel Stingel, recording
specialist in the class.

Superintendent Sandra Romanowski announced that so far this
year, attendance numbers are higher than last year, rising from
95.84 to 96.28.

She also announced the School Street Elementary School open
house, which will be held tonight, will feature students’ art work
on display as well as a student demonstration of square dancing
will be conducted. The open house begins at 6:30 p.m.

Also, Romanowski said that three students won first, second and
third place at the Future Farmer’s Association events. Andy
McCormick received first place, Ceegan Danielson received second
place and Craig Lombardy achieved third place.

She also congratulated the seventh and eighth grade middle
school football teams for being undefeated during the season.
