COUDERSPORT – Chris Cavallari had 12 carries for 126 yards and
three of Coudersport’s four touchdowns as the Falcons defeated
Clarion 32-14 in District 9 Class A playoff football Friday.
Clarion opened scoring with a one-yard touchdown scamper by Brad
Rapp at the end of a three-play, four-yard drive that began
following a fumble recovery on a bad punt snap. Clarion’s Jon
Kemmer’s kick was good, making the score 7-0.
Coudersport responded with Boomer Weitzel’s 15-yard pass finding
Logan Hathaway. The Falcons’ Justin Kinder found Hathaway again for
the two-point conversion, putting Coudersport up 8-7.
Scoring in the third quarter began as a fumble recovery,
followed by a drive of three plays and 29 yards saw Clarion’s Adam
Bevevino scoot one-yard into the end zone. Kemmer’s kick was good
again, putting Clarion ahead 14-8.
Coudersport was not behind for long, however. A fumble recovery
in its favor started a drive of two plays and six yards, that sent
Cavallari on a two-yard run for the score. The two-point conversion
was also a successful run by Cavallari, putting Coudersport ahead
once again.
Cavallari then dominated the fourth quarter for the Falcons,
scoring on a 61-yard run, which was followed by a successful pass
to Blair Heimel for the two-point conversion. Coudy added six more
points on a Cavallari 49-yard run, followed by a pass to Sam Decker
for another two points.
Keying the Falcons on offense were Weitzel, who was 7 of 13 for
one touchdown and 57 yards, Sam Decker who had two carries for 62
yards, Hathaway, who had four carries for 42 yards and Kinder, who
was three of seven for 57 yards.
Leading the Falcons defensively with 10 tackles each were Carin
Knight, Drew Levavasseur and Dirk Cowburn.
“We made some mistakes and were able to hang in there and come
back,” said Paul Simcoe, Coudersport coach. “They scored first and
we came back and went ahead, they scored again and were ahead and
we came back again.
“It was good for our kids to be behind like that, so they could
see they can come from behind.
“Once we got things rolling in the second half we played
better,” Simcoe continued. “We made some mistakes and had turnovers
that could have been costly.
“Clarion made it hard for us to run the ball in the first half,
too. We kept finding a way around it and things got better in the
second half.”
Coudersport will play Friday as it hosts the winner of the
Johnsonburg-Cameron County contest, which will take place
tonight.
