IT’S TODAY: Every election day – or so it seems – we encourage
our readers to vote because the issues are so compelling. But this
time, we really mean it! See you there.
JUST WHISTLE: Rose Johnson of Kane writes, “Regarding the ‘Just
Whistle’ poem – Many Kane residents will remember ‘the whistling
garbage man.’ Although this man was small in stature, he would
throw those heavy, filled cans onto the the truck and never stop
whistling!”
“You could hear his whistling when he got out of the truck. He
brought so much sunshine to so many lives and still brightens up
many people’s day with his whistling. Yes, I feel if there should
be more whistling done in our lives today.”
We also heard from Susan Wilcox who wrote, “Your item about
whistling brought a smile. I tend to whistle absent-mindedly while
working and have had people comment on it. My mother’s family, the
Mundy family of Smethport, all whistled.”
“My mother would tell me of she and her sisters whistling while
doing the dishes. I have been doing some genealogy research in the
old Smethport papers and read an item about my uncle, P.J. Mundy,
being in a band playing at the Fair and his major talent was a
‘whistling solo.’
“I think it was kind of frowned on for women, especially, to
whistle … not something a ‘proper’ young woman would do in an
earlier era.
“I have been reading the debate about Florida vs. Pa. (I’ll put
it that way since I’m from Smethport not Bradford) and I’m sure the
same debate would occur with those of us who have moved out West,
specifically, Arizona. I won’t comment and open another can of
worms!
“My mother was Jane Mundy Wilcox. They grew up on Marvin Street
in Smethport. Probably not too many people left who remember my
uncles and their athletic abilities – John, Mert, P.J. and Everald
played football and track mainly and held records for quite a while
in track, I believe.
“The only one who seems to have inherited their abilities is my
niece who played soccer, field hockey and basketball in high school
in Harrisburg.
“I enjoy keeping up on the news online and try to get back as
often as possible to get my ‘fix’ of green hills to keep me going
when it’s 110 here in Phoenix!”
