TIE TIME: Tom Wright had a quick answer to Donald Carlson’s
question about the tie plant on High Street in
Bradford.[neWLine]

He writes, “”I remember it well with the creosote odor which is
very distinctive.””[neWLine]

“”I remember Bob Kilinger was the manager of the Koppers Tie
Plant and I also remember his wife Janet. My parents were friends
of theirs and I remember going to the Tie Plant with my stepfather
A.O. Alexander to do various welding projects.[neWLine]

“”Also I remember the German Prisoners of War who worked there
until WWII was over. They seemed to be quite content to be working
there and I do not recall them creating any problems.[neWLine]

“”The Tie Plant had a small steam engine which we called ‘The
Dinky’ to move the large containers of untreated railroad ties into
the large vessels of creosote where the ties were submerged in hot
creosote which was then pressurized and held at pressure for some
length of time.[neWLine]

“”The pressure was released and the ‘Dinky’ would pull the
dollys loaded with ties out of the vessel and allowed to drip off
the excess creosote and cool before stacking in the storage
area.[neWLine]

“”I think that Franny Northrup worked in the plant and ran the
‘Dinky’ although I could be mistaken on that. This was hot, smelly
and dirty work.[neWLine]

“”Shortly after the war the plant closed and Koppers Co.
transferred Bob Kilinger to a facility in Michigan and sometime in
the ’50s he was inspecting a tower and he fell about 70 feet to his
death.””[neWLine][neWLine]

AH, MEMORIES: Steve Mathys writes: “”For all those who left
Bradford for other places but can only remember what you don’t like
about this very unique town, I’ll share some memories that make me
long for home:””[neWLine]

“”Sled riding at Zippo ski slope, thick slices at Napolis,
Hobson Place School, the smell of sweet Pennsylvania crude oil, pop
and candy at Sylvia’s, riding bumpers on Barbour Street, swimming
at Callahan and the hole behind UPB, walking the railroad tracks,
concerts at The Square, skating at Evan’s, fishing at the bay, the
Big 30 game, riding ice down the creek, all nighters at the YMCA,
and watching the future State Horseshoe Champion (two-time) play
shoes at Hanley Park.””[neWLine][neWLine]

GAS PAIN: A caller reported Wednesday that gas in San Antonio,
Texas, was going for $1.99 a gallon.
