14th annual Gourmet Gala set for Saturday

Local philanthropists can put their money where their mouths
are.

The 14th annual Gourmet Gala, organized by the local chapter of
the American Cancer Society, will be held from 6:30 to 11:30 p.m.
Saturday at Pennhills Club.

American Cancer Society income development specialist Fran
Stewart told The Era organizers are expecting about 200 people for
this year’s event, which will feature cuisine from 10 area
restaurants.

Abbasso at the Downbeat, Buck’s Pizza, Chu Lee Garden, Donna’s
Desserts, The New Corydon Hotel, Pennhills Club, Pine Acres
Restaurant, Sports Cafe, Top of the Line Catering and The Willows
will all provide samples from their menus for attendees.

“Basically,” Stewart said, “it’s a fun-filled evening … about
giving and (cancer) survivors.”

She said the evening’s entertainment will include both silent
and live auctions, prizes and a “treasure box” contest where
attendees can buy a chance to open the box and win the undisclosed
amount of cash inside.

Cindy Keane of Bradford, a breast cancer survivor, will be the
guest speaker.

Music for the evening fundraiser will be provided by the Golden
Blues Band, the leader of which will also serve as emcee.

“It’s a party to benefit the American Cancer Society,” Steward
explained, “but it’s not about the party, it’s about the giving and
the survivors.”

The event is semi-formal, she added, so “no blue jeans,
please.”

This year’s theme is “Holiday,” Stewart said, adding many of the
auction items donated by area businesses follow the theme. Items up
for bid include a DVD player, a carved-wood framed mirror, a
handcrafted toy box, Buffalo Bills tickets and more. There will be
25 items for the silent auction, and four for the live auction.

Those planning to attend who would like to reserve tickets can
contact the chapter office at 56 Thompson Ave. or by calling.
Tickets will be available at the door. A cash bar will be
available.

“It’s a good time to dig deep for a great cause,” Stewart
said.
