Gary Hoy wrote the words; the music was courtesy of the creator
of The Beverly Hillbillies. But when it came to naming the song
that lauded the 125th anniversary of American Refining Group’s
Bradford refinery, Hoy went to the ARG employees themselves to name
that tune.
That challenge was met with 36 submissions by ARG employees and
their family members. In the end, ARG President and Chief Operating
Officer Harvey Golubock had the winning title -ð”The Story of Brad
Penn.”
The song, which recounts the beginning of Brad Penn Oil, was
crafted by Hoy after he found out that ARG’s celebration was going
to take place the same weekend as the annual Street Dreams Car Club
show.
Hoy is the president of the Street Dreams Car Club and member of
the club’s Blues Brothers.
“I tried to think of a tune that was easy (to sing) but that was
a catchy tune at that,” Hoy said.
Something which would be barrels of fun.
The tune ended up being the theme to The Beverly Hillbillies,
even though Hoy sometimes starts with the theme to Harper’s Valley
PTA, fellow car club member Tubby Colella said.
Then the words started to flow, but when he got to the second
stanza, he needed some help. That’s when he called ARG, who
provided some unique terms as MEK workers.
Before long, a song was born.
The Blues Brothers, consisting of Hoy, Colella, Kenny Eddy and
Jerry Johnson Sr. – performed the song during “Greaser Weekend” –
held the same weekend as the ARG celebration.
The song made an impact.
“I thought the song was great,” Golubock said. “I think we were
just thrilled Gary and the Street Dreams thought enough of our
celebration to take the time to actually dedicate a song to us … we
are thrilled.”
The group first sang the song at the ARG parade, but the sound
system didn’t work. However, they sang it again the next day, sound
and all.
“I stood there while they sang to me. It was a lot of fun,”
Golubock said, adding he was able to tie in the two events together
for one weekend.
“It provided a nice weekend for Bradford and the community,” he
said.
But it’s not the swan song for Hoy’s creation just yet. The
group will perform the original tune – plus a Motown version – in
this year’s Kiwanis Kapers, which takes the stage Nov. 10, 11 and
12 at Bradford Area High School.
Hoy created the new version for the younger crowd.
“There’s a lot of younger oil field workers,” said Hoy, who
Colella calls “Mr. Idea.””Do something they would like.
“I’ll have a disco version soon,” Hoy joked.
But when the group performs next month, there will be a name to
that tune.
A panel of judges – Hoy, Colella, Jennifer Taylor of ARG, Diane
Sheeley, executive director of the Bradford Area Chamber of
Commerce, and Sandra Rhodes, Bradford Era city editor – looked over
the prospective titles, before narrowing down to ARG’s Bubblin’
Crude, “The Ballad of ARG” and the winner, “The Story of Brad
Penn.”
The judges then voted for their favorites, not knowing who the
authors were.
“There was a good response,” Taylor said, including one from the
COO.
“Of course I submitted a name,” Golubock said before the winner
was named. He quickly added he hoped the judges would not pick his
submission.
But in the end, Golubock’s refined title won out.
