REMINDER: OK, folks, gird: Daylight Savings Time ends at 2 a.m.
Sunday and while we gain an hour’s sleep, we also gain those short
winter days when the sun sets about 5 p.m. So, remember – fall
back.[neWLine][neWLine]
NO ROCKS: We thought this was a beautiful little
email.[neWLine]
Rose Zavagno (Bennardo) wrote us, “”There is no bad news
regarding Bradford, a wonderful city to bring up families. No real
crime to speak of and who needs to go up to Maine or whatever to
see the beauty of the changing of the color of
trees.””[neWLine]
“”The beauty that surrounds Bradford is hard to
beat.[neWLine]
“”We have lived on the West Coast for 60 years and my four
brothers all made a good living here but Bradford was always a
place where they grew up and loved.[neWLine]
“”Everyone knew one another and life was serene and
quiet.[neWLine]
“”Like others have said – if the people that lived there and
moved to Florida, let them stay in Florida, but please don’t throw
rocks at Bradford family life.””[neWLine][neWLine]
THAT BREAD: Bradford obviously had a lot of incredible bakeries
at one time.[neWLine]
Tony Falconi of Lewis Run writes, “”Speaking of Italian bread,
let us remember another Italian bread baker GaetanoðPace. The
bakery was located onðRiver Street next to the oldðTony Colella
bar.””[neWLine]
“”As a kid my mother sent me there to get a fresh loaf of bread
just out of the oven early in the morning. If I recall correctly he
used wood to heat his ovens.[neWLine]
“”After the ovens were heated and the bread baked he would push
the ashes out the back window into Tuna Creek. He depended on the
high water to take the ashes away! Of course, that would not be
acceptable today.[neWLine]
“”The bread was just as good as Colella’s. My mom and dad bought
both breads and they were good with a spread of margarine. Butter
was expensiveðback in thoseðdays.””[neWLine]
Bill Wallace writes, “”I miss the hard rolls from Davis Bakery
and still order my salt-rising bread from Port Allegany and they
ship it to me. Some things you can’t get out of your system no
matter where you call home.””[neWLine]
Speaking of Colella’s bread, Jerry Berkhouse phoned to tell us
the original location of its bakery – in the Elm Street area near
where the 5th ward school once stood.
