RTS for Wednesday

FINAL WORDS: We continue our countdown today by Nancy Kania of
the pros and cons of living in Florida:

“3. Not correct: six-lane roads in ‘super shape’ and average
70-mph speed limit. That might apply for portions of I-75 or I-95
but they are not six-laned the total distance. Our area has a
four-lane interstate, filled with trucks, construction vehicles,
and out-of-state drivers. Our speeds are the same as most towns:
somewhere between 45 and 55 mph.

“2. Correct: Good local fruits and vegetables in season. Also
correct: much of the really ‘good stuff’ is shipped out. Fields are
being sold for developers to put up condos. Local grocery stores
probably do as well with imports. We get terrible peaches, by the
way. Nothing is truly cheap anymore, due to gas prices.

“1. Yes, coming home to PA is priceless.

“Florida schools are woefully behind PA, too. Gas is now $2.45 –
not great, would you say? It has been over $3 this year.

“Florida is not paradise for everyone. Count your blessings and
enjoy the friendliness of rural PA. Oh, did I mention
hurricanes?”

FOR TODAY: Those “final words” (above) are only final for today.
We still have more mail on this subject. As we write this, Buffalo
is cleaning up from 30 inches of Friday the 13th snow. Certainly
gives new perspective to our thoughts on the subject of
Florida.

SAY WHAT?: We take no joy in bashing a fellow whipping boy, but
we can’t resist this one. We received a press release from the U.S.
Postal Service about its Columbus Day schedule two days after
Columbus Day!

The release was dated Oct. 5, postmarked Oct. 6, and, of course,
put in the mail. We don’t know why it took until Oct. 11 to arrive
in our mail stack – perhaps because of the Columbus Day
holiday?

And, in case you were wondering, the release stated that even
though post offices were closed on Columbus Day “the Postal
Services expects the mail deposited by both business and
residential customers to come close to that of normal Monday
volumes. The Postal Service is gearing up for the processing and
transportation of this mail by conducting normal mail collections
throughout the Erie District on Columbus Day, Oct. 9.”

They also urged customers to deposit their mail before 5 p.m.
Columbus Day and not wait until Tuesday.
