Parents are notorious for helping their children with anything
they need, but it’s not often when a child in preschool is able to
help a parent. It’s even rarer when that help saves a parent’s
life.
That’s just what Paige Weaver, the 4-year-old daughter of Sandra
Weaver of Edna Avenue, was able to do this past Saturday.
Paige’s calm and quick reaction to her mother’s collapse helped
save her life.
Paige’s mother had been suffering from a cold for more than a
week when, on Saturday, she decided to workout on a treadmill after
feeling a little better. She had taken an antibiotic and Claritin D
as a decongestant.
“The last thing I remember is feeling very dizzy, light-headed
and a little nauseous after running quite a ways,” Sandra Weaver
said. “The next thing I knew I was being woke up and had EMTs,
police officers, etc., standing over top of me in my living
room.”
Apparently, she said, her heart rate started going faster and
then dropped dramatically due to the medication reacting with her
heart rate and blood pressure. She fell unconscious.
Paige said Monday she was in her room when her mom collapsed.
When coming out to wake her mother to no avail, Paige picked up the
cell phone that was already turned on and laying on the coffee
table.
“I heard you boom on the floor,” Paige said to her mother. “I
heard a bam noise and come out to see, ‘What’s that?’ I grabbed the
phone and called two numbers (on the speed dial). I called one. I
said, ‘Mommy collapsed. She wasn’t talking.'”
Sandra Weaver said she taught Paige how to dial 911, but she
always used the speed dial so Paige picked up on how to use that
from her.
“She saw me do that a million times,” Sandra Weaver said.
Sandra Weaver said Paige pressed the speed dial number that
called her friend and boyfriend’s mother, Kathy Webster.
“She asked ‘Who’s this?'” Sandra Weaver said. “And Kathy said,
‘This is Kathy.’ Paige said ‘My mom collapsed. She’s not talking.’
Kathy asked her what she was talking about. Paige said, ‘This is
for real. I am not joking.'”
Webster then called 911 and informed them of the situation.
Paige said while she waited for help to arrive, she stayed on
the couch, keeping an eye on her mom. Paige unlocked the door for
medical personnel when they arrived.
“First, one policeman walked in, then they all came in,” Paige
said.
Sandra Weaver said police asked Paige how long her mother had
been out, and Paige told them a while.
“I’m just amazed that she knew what to do right away,” Sandra
Weaver said. “When I came to and heard what happened, it was just
amazing that she knew that I was in trouble and knew to call for
help. She was very calm, the police officer said. She knew she did
a good job. She wasn’t crying or anything.
“If it wasn’t for my daughter, I wouldn’t know where I’d be
right now. I am just the proudest mom probably in the whole world.
I could have been laying there for who knows how long. My boyfriend
would not get home for another couple of hours. I think she was
just extraordinary.”
