ST. MARYS – Bradford High’s Kate Cohen and Sara Eger won the
District 9 Class AAA doubles tennis championship Tuesday.
Cohen and Eger defeated Amy Anderson and Janel Huffman of
Punxsutawney 6-7 (9), 6-0, 6-4 to earn the title.
Cohen and Eger topped Grace Beauseigneur and Lauren Martell of
Clearfield 6-0, 6-0 and then beat Rachel Sytich and Cassie Califf
of DuBois 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 to advance to the finals against Anderson
and Huffman.
“I’m so happy for Sara and Kate,” Bradford coach Sue Aljoe said.
“They both have had terrific seasons in singles and have worked
hard on their doubles game. They have steadily improved in doubles
during the season.
“We thought they had a shot at doing really well in the
tournament. They played their best doubles match in the
championship and I couldn’t be prouder of both of them. This was a
terrific win for them and the program.”
It’s the first doubles title for the Bradford girls’ tennis
program in several years.
Bradford’s other double entry, Leslie Shallop and Shay Wilson,
lost 6-3, 6-4 to Clearfield’s Courtney Kauch and Emily
VonGunden.
In Monday’s Class AAA team tournament, DuBois ousted the Lady
Owls 3-2.
