Jadlowiec improving after suffering stroke in August

Former 16-year State Rep. Ken Jadlowiec is now home and getting
better each day after suffering a stuttering stroke on Aug. 7.

In fact, according to his wife Monday, he had even intended to
mow the lawn before she returned home from shopping – something of
which he may not yet be ready to do – at least not physically.

Denise Jadlowiec explained that her husband had what is called a
“stuttering” stroke, where it actually took five days to complete
itself. This left him paralyzed on his right side.

She said he was then sent to Hamot Medical Center in Erie and
eventually to Health South to go through intensive therapy to gain
the use of his limbs on the right side back.

“I brought him home in a wheelchair, his speech was good, and he
just recently started using a walker,” added Denise Jadlowiec.

“He is very determined and has the fight in him as he always
had,” she added. “In fact, this afternoon while I was gone
shopping, he had pulled the lawn mower out and was going to do
it.”

She also said the neighbors have been so nice and helpful to
them by pitching in when they can.

As the 67th district representative, Jadlowiec ran unopposed for
16 years, except for the first year he ran for office. He decided
not to seek re-election in 2002.

At that time, he was quoted in article that said his proudest
moment was when he helped American Refining Group buy Witco Corp.
in 1997. This move helped keep $49 million in the local economy. He
was also proud of the funds he was able to get for the University
of Pittsburgh at Bradford to help them expand while he was in
office and for helping the oil and gas industry, while obtaining
funds for U.S. Route 219 as needed.

Jadlowiec himself got on the phone and said he is doing better,
after admitting he was scared when he returned home for the first
time.

“My right arm is getting better, I have to work at it,” he said.
“I have therapy three times a week (in Bradford).”

He also described a new program he would like to try called
SaeboFlex, which is a hand unit that causes electrical impulses so
the hand muscles work.

Jadlowiec also said he appreciates the comfort he has received
from everyone.

“Thanks for all of the cards and prayers. I know while I was in
Erie and at home I got over 200 cards,” he said.

While in office, the former lawmaker was well liked in the
Legislature on both ends of the political spectrum.

Even though he is Republican, when Jadlowiec announced he was
leaving the position, Democrats came forward as well to say their
good-byes.

At the time, Jadlowiec said he enjoyed working with people, but
needed a break from the long hours the job demanded.
