RTS for Friday

COLD TRUTH: No doubt, it was pretty chilly in Bradford on
Thursday morning.

One of our readers, however, cautions us not to jump to
conclusions about Bradford being the cold spot in the country.

“It was 32 at the airport, the lowest recorded temperature in
the state, but not that close to the national low of 25 at Doe Lake
and Stonington, Mich. At the high school? 37.4.”

He goes one to quote some other national lows this month,
observing “we have it pretty good around here.”

Some examples, on Sept. 20, it was 23 at Truckee, Calif.; Sept.
19, 19 degrees at West Yellowstone, Mont.; Sept. 18, 17 degrees at
Stanley, Idaho; Sept. 17, 19 degrees at Gunnison, Colo., and Ely,
Nev.; Sept. 16, again in Truckee where the mercury hit only 18.

His list goes on but you get the point. Most of the lows for the
month were in Truckee, Stanley, or West Yellowstone. Nary a mention
of Bradford, Pa.

“By the way, the airport has recorded the national recorded low
only six times since 1995, according to the USA Today. It’s
interesting to note that all six times it happened during the
spring and summer months.”

MORE NUMBERS: While we’re on a “numerical” subject, let’s turn
to the numbers rolling in on gas prices in other parts of the
civilized world:

Tom Sicheri writes Thursday: “Gas prices in Virginia – In
Gainesville, a gas war is on. WAWA was as low as $1.97; 7-11 was
$1.99; Mobil was $1.99.

In Kentucky, a report from Willis Deitz: “Gas in Murray, Ky.,
today (Sept. 20) is selling at 2.11, with the Kroger card having
spent at least $100 you get it for 2.01 a gallon. Will let you know
when it gets under $2.”

Also in Kentucky, Ray Baruffalo, a former area resident, writes
Thursday morning: “… just to ‘pour fuel on the fire’ as it were, I
filled up yesterday here in Lexington, Ky., for $2.02.9, but as I
was filling up they changed the sign to $2.25.9, but today it
dropped off a little to $2.19.9, still, that’s the nearest I’ve
seen to $2 gas in two years.”

Finally for today, the “high:” C.J. Ditsious writes, “I drove
into downtown Baltimore yesterday (9/20/06) and passed a station
selling a gallon of gas for $2.25.”

Bradford? The last time we checked, it was $2.49 or so.
