Bradford’s Main Street Moviehouse will run another 10-week
series of Independent Film Nights on Mondays beginning Oct. 2
through Dec. 11.
James Guelfi, who headed the “Light up the Marquee” committee
which raised the funds to reopen the Moviehouse, said the movies
begin at 5:15 p.m.
“We picked the time for Monday at 5:15 (p.m.), which people told
us was a good time for them,” Guelfi said. “We chose 5:15 (p.m.)
because we can’t interfere with the regular films … and people get
out of work, come there and go out to eat. That’s why we chose
Monday. It’s a slow night of the week.”
The schedule of films is as follows:
Oct. 2 – “Neil Young: Heart of Gold”
Oct. 9 – “World’s Fastest Indian”
Oct. 16 – “Akeelah and the Bee”
Oct. 23 – “Scoop”
Oct. 30 – “A Prairie Home Companion”
Nov. 6 – “An Inconvenient Truth”
Nov. 13 – “Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man”
Nov. 20 – “The Notorious Bettie Paige”
Nov. 27 – “Tsotsi”
Dec. 4 – “Little Miss Sunshine”
Dec. 11 – “Brick”
Guelfi thinks there will be a good turnout for this series of
films, especially for “Little Miss Sunshine” and “A Prairie Home
Companion,” which he pointed out as receiving four stars by the
critics.
The Moviehouse also ran another 10-week series beginning in late
January or early February and into March earlier this year.
Guelfi said the same three sponsors – Ann and Dick Kessel,
Louise Stoltz and Bradford Travel Service – for the series of films
earlier this year are the sponsors for this series of films.
“People like seeing films not shown anywhere else,” Guelfi said.
“And they’re never disappointed. I had people come up to me and say
they loved the film.”
Guelfi said the average audience for the films was around 160
people, and people came from the surrounding areas, including
Emporium, St. Marys, Olean, N.Y., and Allegany, N.Y., to watch the
films.
“It was a trial to see if it would work in Bradford,” Guelfi
said. “And it did. (The Main Street Moviehouse) is the only theater
showing independent films in the (area). Otherwise, you’d have to
go to Buffalo (N.Y.) It helps keep the theater going in a slow
time.”
Guelfi said the audiences also went out to dinner afterwards,
helping some of the restaurants on Main Street.
He said he hopes to start another series of independent film
nights in January 2007.
