FOR SHAME?: A response to a story in Tuesday’s edition
concerning complaints aired about an industry at the Foster
Township Supervisors meeting the day before …
Bill Glover writes, “I read about the noise being made in Foster
Township and the complaints being made. Then I look at what is left
of the Bradford area, the shambles left from not allowing industry
to move in years ago.”
“Now there is some activity for jobs in the area and everyone is
up in arms.
“What a pity. I was just back in Bradford and was totally
shocked to see the conditions there. People should hang their heads
in shame of what has happened to a once very beautiful city.
“The oil industry is on the rebounds and this means jobs for
many people. Jobs create business but there is nothing left in
Bradford to shop or buy. When you have to go to Olean or somewhere
else it doesn’t help the area.
“I’ve been in San Jose, Calif., for 32 years and you don’t know
what noise is, but we have very wonderful shopping areas that
create jobs also. Buy ear plugs for sleeping at night – it’s time
to wake up.”
We leave a response up to our readers. …
MEA CULPA: The newspaper business has a way of keeping one
humble.
Today a note from J. Clifford commenting on a recent column we
carried about Bradford’s weather.
Our item, Clifford points out, “had one of the most misused
spellings. Nothing ‘effects’ our weather – it ‘affects’ our
weather. Maybe your editors should learn to read the dictionary as
to the meaning of words and the difference between ‘effects’ and
‘affects.'”
These are two words that we have looked up hundreds of times.
For some reason, the correct spellings never seem to sink in. We
will be much more careful in the future.
NO WAY!: Willis Deitz writes these discouraging words: “As of
Friday 9/8 gas is selling at 2.19 in Murray, Ky.” Coming in a close
second was Dawn Blaisdell of Bradford whose daughter reported in
from Taylorsville, N.C., on Tuesday that the price was $2.20.
Rick Peters writes us this week: “I work in Olean, N.Y., and
gasoline is 2.66 at Country Fair; 2.41 at the Indians. My
recommendation for the community in Bradford? Teach these local
station a lesson – Buy elsewhere.”
