Street Dreams Car Club throwing “”Greaser Weekend”” downtown

Get out your leather jackets and poodle skirts; the Street
Dreams Car Club of Bradford is throwing a “Greaser Weekend”
Saturday and Sunday.

The eighth annual Autumn Daze car show is set to take place on
Main Street this weekend, according to Street Dreams Car Club
president Gary Hoy.

Since the show is coinciding with the local celebration marking
the 125th birthday of American Refining Group Inc., Hoy said, this
year’s theme is “Greaser Weekend.” He went on to say scenery
featuring oil derricks and a 9-foot “gusher” that will send out
water will also be part of the show.

“Everyone talks about our show,” Hoy said of the annual event.
“It’s the premier (car) show of the area.”

The car show is set to start at 11 a.m. Sunday, he said, and is
already boasting more than 50 registrants. That number is double
last year’s pre-registration count, he said, adding more than 250
people participated in last year’s car show with vehicles parked
all along Main Street, around Veterans Square, and off sections of
Pine, Chestnut and Kennedy streets.

More than 100 trophies will be awarded, including the best of
show and several memorial awards, starting about 4 p.m.

“We’re not out to keep it from growing,” Hoy said, adding,
however, that if the number of participants doubled along with the
pre-registration numbers, there might be a problem fitting everyone
downtown.

Also on Sunday, the new Little Miss Street Dreams will be
crowned between 1:15 and 1:45 p.m. Hoy said last year’s winner will
be on hand, and the winner will be announced by “Barbie” and a
Bradford City Police officer after they drive down Main Street in a
1947 Plymouth police cruiser.

Each participant will receive a flower, a tiara and prizes, Hoy
said. The money raised through the penny-a-vote process for Little
Miss Street Dreams is all donated to the Make a Wish Foundation, he
added. Last year, the pageant alone donated more than $1,100 to
Make a Wish.

“It’s a good memory for the kids,” Hoy said of the contest.

After funds to cover expenses are taken in by Street Dreams, the
rest of the weekend’s profits go to the Downtown Bradford Business
District Association, Hoy said.

He said thousands of people come out for the car show, calling
it “the biggest thing in downtown Bradford right now.” The club
boasts about 400 members currently, Hoy said, including a branch
for children and a “Red Hatters” group.

Those planning to attend the car show and events Sunday, which
also includes live musical entertainment, can come out to Dancin’
in the Streets from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the head of Main
Street.

Hoy said those planning to attend the dance, featuring Freddy
and the Jets, should bring lawn chairs for the event, which he said
will be “just like a Rock ‘N Roll concert.”

The girls participating in the Little Miss Street Dreams
Contest, last year’s winner and “Barbie” will all be at the
dance.

Staff from Abbasso at the Downbeat will be at the dance
Saturday, selling hot dogs, sausage sandwiches and soft drinks, he
said.

The best part about the weekend events, Hoy added, is that they
are free to the public.
