OIL NOTES: Another “oil patch” recollection in honor of ARG
refinery’s 125th anniversary, this one from Barney Snyder:

“I read some of your readers comments about growing up with the
oil business. My dad worked for Forest Oil all of his working
years.

“He worshipped Forest Dorn and Frank Miller and had nothing but
respect for George Blaisdell, the O’Kains of Case Cutlery, and was
quite lost when he retired and even more so when my mom insisted
that they move to Tucson.

“I now return every five years for a high school reunion. It
reminds me of hunting rabbits in the fields across from Hawthorne
Road with Bill Hanson, playing ball on the Kendall lot, having the
pump house thumping put me to sleep at night and, of course, the
smell of crude oil.”

Barney can relate to the fond memories people have of Bradford –
even with the smell of oil in the air.

“I have to guess they are loving it because of the togetherness
it affords. In a way I envy them. I guess like all adults who have
been raised in a happy childhood environment, Bradford will always
be a great place and I would go back and live it all over again in
a heartbeat.

“I hope the oil business continues to thrive if it is giving
Bradford that needed shot in the arm.

“The young people of today can’t imagine how great us old fogies
had it growing up. I can’t get the grin off my face as remember
while writing this. All I can say is good luck Bradford, thank you
Zippo/Case for hanging in there and kudos to you all.”

GAS PAIN: Rob Looker of Eldred writes, “As a continuum to the
saga of our high-priced gasoline in the immediate area, while
traveling in Michigan over the Labor Day weekend, we consistently
found gas prices between $2.49 and $2.60 per gallon. In fact, one
station had mid-grade for $2.49.”

As we’re all well aware, gasoline prices are dropping – more so
in some areas compared to ours. No doubt ours will go down, too,
while still maintaining the historical gap between Bradford and the
rest of the civilized world.

Forgive our cynicism, but could the drop in gas prices be in
some way related to the upcoming mid-term elections?
