RTS for Saturday

AUG. 14: A reader phoned to tell us that V-J Day is, in fact,
Aug. 14, 1945, and not Aug. 15 as we reported the other day. How
so? Aug. 14 is her birthday, and she remembers joining in
Bradford’s celebration of the event. “”Everybody was on Main Street
going crazy,”” she said. We don’t dispute her report but can only
say all our reference material cites Aug. 15, 1945. More on this
later.[neWLine][neWLine]

KUDOS: Jean Kan Hall writes from Sun Lakes, Ariz., to tell us of
a Bradford bridge player who has reached a significant milestone in
the world of bridge.[neWLine]

Frederick Smith has made “”life master,”” she reports. Jean
tells us she read of the accomplishment in the American Contract
Bridge League Bulletin.[neWLine]

“”You have a club in Bradford and publish the names of the
winners in the Era.ðI played there before moving to Arizona. They
have many kinds of competition including international. It is quite
an accomplishment for players from such small clubs to achieve
‘life master.'””[neWLine][neWLine]

EAU DE OIL: Another of our readers can relate to the alluring
scent of crude oil in the valley.[neWLine]

She writes, “”I brought my first husband to Bradford in the late
’60s to meet my family before we became engaged. As we were driving
through the area of Kennedy Springs, he said, ‘There’s something
wrong with the car, I smell oil.’ I laughed, and had a hard time
convincing him we were almost at the end of our trip to oil
country!””[neWLine]

“”I can still smell it when I return and miss hearing the
‘heartbeat’ of the mountains the pumps
created.””[neWLine][neWLine]

OLD SCHOOLS: Ellen Songer Tingley writes from sunny Florida:
“”In response to Marilyn Smith’s recollection of schools – M.J.
Ryan was in Lafayette right across from the McKean Memorial
cemetery. It housed grades one through eight. Then the students
were bussed to Floyd C. Fretz for 9th grade.””[neWLine]

“”What wonderful memories I have of going to school there. Lots
of activities for the students, especially remember the school
dances in the cafeteria and the playground.[neWLine]

“”My husband Keith and I live in Tampa, Fla., now and although
we miss the hills of Bradford, it’s nice not to have to look
forward to snow!””[neWLine]

We also heard from Larry Ewing: “”Carol Henke’s question
concerning the Rew School – it was actually named Earl J. Hyatt and
it was in Foster Township.””
