Ten letterwinners return for a Bradford Lady Owls soccer team
that hopes to vie for a District 9 title in the 2006 season.
Doriguzzi’s squad has been practicing since Aug. 14 and the
coach is pretty pleased with what he has seen so far.
“I’m pretty pleased with what I’ve seen so far,” he said. “Every
person came into practice in good physical condition.”
Letterwinners who will help solidify the Lady Owls as a team are
four-year starter and senior Whitney Cline, Kayla Murphey, Tricia
Copeland, Meagan Little, Amanda Morrison, Chelsea Rinfrette,
Lindsay Sherman, Katie Vecellio, Katie White and Katie Zapel.
“Whitney Cline is a tremendous athlete,” Doriguzzi said. “She is
the model team player.
“Kayla Murphey has made a lot of improvements to her game in the
last year,” he added. “Tricia Copeland is a tenacious defender with
good tactical awareness. She is the anchor of our defense.
“Meagan Little is a midfielder who has fine technical and
tactical ability,” Doriguzzi continued. “Amanda Morrison has an
incredible work ethic and put a lot of time into off-season
improvement.
“Chelsea Rinfrette, our goalkeeper, is making a nice transition
from a field player to goalie,” he added. “Lindsay Sherman is a
forward with remarkable foot speed. Katie Vecellio is a fullback
who has not played soccer for a few years, but looks like she has
never missed a beat. Katie White is a midfielder who has great
speed and endurance. Katie Zapel is a fullback who is not only a
smart, but a dedicated team player.”
As for competing for the D-9 championship, Doriguzzi added,
“There is always hope for that, but we will be taking it one game
at a time.”
Bradford finished up last season with a record of 11-8-1,
suffering a 2-1 loss to DuBois in the D-9 semifinals. The Lady Owls
regular season mark was good enough for third place in D-9.
In the offseason, the Lady Owls worked on individual and team
training. Soccer camp in August has helped the team develop further
defensively.
“We’re in the process of enhancing our defensive play,”
Doriguzzi noted. “Our real weakness is our attacking play. We are
working on new tactics to get more goal scoring opportunities.”
No matter what the Lady Owls’ strengths and weaknesses are, they
can rely on their returning letterwinners.
“One of our team objectives is to be able to win consistently
against teams in the upper echelon of District 9,” Doriguzzi
continued. “In order to be successful this season we must continue
to build team cohesiveness and develop a more aggressive style of
play.”
Rounding out this year’s roster are Leah Anderson, Adrienne
Sloan, Alexa Wilton, Leah Costik, BreAnn Gleason, Jenna Gorrell,
Meghan Hollenbeck, Brooke Milbrandt, Casey Vecchio, Miranda
Whiteman, Sarah Young, Chelsea Colosimo, Tara Coats and Danielle
Harbaugh.
“Leah Anderson is a smart and focused forward and midfielder,”
the coach noted. “Adrienne Sloan is a forward with good foot
skills. Alexa Wilton is a forward with a quick player that should
make an immediate contribution.”
As for Bradford’s 2006 schedule, a few roadblocks to the
District 9 title may lie ahead.
“The teams we’re looking to beat are Clearfield and DuBois,
because they are usually on top of the District 9,” Doriguzzi said.
“We would like to beat them on a consistent basis. We just have to
play hard every game. There are no gimmies.”
