Round the Square for Saturday August 26, 2006

COUNTRY FAIR: Music, music, music. That might be the theme of
this weekend’s Crook Farm Fair as it adds a wide selection of
old-time music to its traditional historic programs.[neWLine]

The 27th annual Fair, to be held at the Crook Farm on Seaward
Avenue Extension, runs from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. today and
Sunday.[neWLine]

Before you head out the door, though, grab your guitar or
harmonica so you can join in a music session at the “”jam tent,”” a
forum for participants to perform whatever music comes to mind –
bluegrass, folk, country. Singers are also welcome.[neWLine]

There will be performances by a blues band, wandering musicians,
a bluegrass gospel group, and local Irish step dancers. There will
also be a dulcimer exhibit and demonstration.[neWLine]

Both days will also include old-time round and square dancing
with everyone – even those with no experience – invited to
participate.[neWLine]

On hand, also, will be the Bucktail Regiment of Civil War
re-enactors.[neWLine]

Along with the fair’s crafts show, there will be demonstrations
of quilting, chair caning, weaving, spinning, and blacksmithing.
For kids, there will be a corn husking contest, petting zoo, pony
rides, face painting, games and a storyteller.[neWLine]

And, as always, there will be tours of the historic farm
buildings.[neWLine]

LOOK UP: While you’re there, scan the sky. Kim Lance writes, “”
… we saw a bald eagle Friday evening (Aug. 18) on our way to the
Model T for our fish fry. He had a fish in his talons, and was
rising from Tuna Creek. He flew directly over us as we sat on the
northbound off ramp on Bolivar. I guess he was having fish for
dinner, too!””[neWLine]

“”Very impressive to see one so close. I knew we have the
Bradford Owls, guess we now have the Bradford Eagle as
well.””[neWLine]

As the cro- er, eagle, flies, Seaward Avenue is not far from the
Lances’ location so look up when you’re at the Crook Farm
Fair.[neWLine]

POST SCRIPT: Fred Richter, who wrote that fantastic explanation
yesterday of why our weather is so extreme, had added a little joke
we couldn’t pass up.[neWLine]

He says, “”By the way, I have heard that it was so windy here in
Mount Alton that a hen faced the wrong way and laid the same egg
three times. Enough!””[neWLine]

“”Let us just enjoy the wonderful changes of our seasons.””
