RTS for Thursday

RACING PHOTOS: Our news staff has been busy putting together a
special edition to mark the 125th birthday of ARG refinery – once
known as Kendall and producer of Kendall motor oil. As part of that
project, a story is being written about Kendall’s involvement in
motorcar racing, much of it at Watkins Glen, N.Y.

That was in the late 1970s and early 1980s and, while The Era
covered a lot of the events at the time, our photo archives have
vanished into thin air.

So this SOS to our readers: If you have photos from Kendall’s
racing foray we would love to borrow them for our special edition.
We will take great care of them, and return them unharmed.

BRAIN TEASER: Ron Swanson has a question for readers: “Just
jogging the memory of area folks. Before the school consolidations,
every town had their own high schools. What were the nicknames of
their sports teams? Ludlow was the Wildcats. I’m told Mt. Jewett
was the Magicians. What were the nicknames of other area schools
from years ago?”

MO’ ZIPPO: That AP article on the Zippo/Case swap meet continues
to make the rounds.

Ron and Peggy (Everly) Paterson of Rehoboth Beach, Del., write,
“In your reports about the extent of press coverage of the recent
Zippo swap meet, we have another one for you. One of our local
papers, the Delaware Coast Press, had an article about the event. …
The paper covers the coastal area of southeast Delaware where we
now live. We are both former Bradford residents and enjoy keeping
up with things on the Era’s web site.”

We also heard from Tom Patton who tells us the article made his
local newspaper, the South Bend (Ind.) Tribune.

Stephanie Cottillion Wagner of Fort Pierce, Fla., also sends
along a clipping from the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers.

SUMMER NOTE: Pat Franco of Rew writes, “People wonder where the
hummingbirds go. I have seven at one time … a lot. Also an oriole.
At my seed feeder, I get a lot of birds – a cardinal sometimes and
a deer every night.”

TODAY’S QUOTE: “Balance and objectivity, without a strong
commitment to the truth, can turn journalism into farce,” said
Chris Hedges, author, columnist, in 2005. As always, our quote is
from our invaluable Freedom Forum calendar.
